The Benefits & Drawbacks Of Using Organic Brake Pads

by George Mason

If you are in the process of replacing the brake pads on your vehicle, you are going to have to determine what type of brake pads you want to use on your vehicle. Here is a quick overview of what organic brake pads are, as well as the drawback and benefits of organic brake pads.

Definition Of Organic Brake Pads

Organic brake pads are also often called non-asbestos organic or NAO brake pads. They were originally created to offer an alternative to asbestos pads as the use of asbestos fell out of flavor. Organic brake pads are made out of Kevlar, rubber, fiber, glass, and carbon.

Most new cars are equipped with organic brake pads because they tend to be one of the least expensive brake pads on the market today, and help save on the bottom line when manufacturing a car. Higher-end new vehicles use different types of brake pads.

Benefits Of Organic Brake Pads

There are numerous benefits that come with using organic brake pads. When replacing your own brake pads, they are generally a very affordable option because they aren't expensive to manufacture.

These types of brake pads work well if you use your vehicle for commuting and normal driving around your local area. These brake pads are great for regular vehicles and for drivers just going back and forth to work and the store.

Organic brake pads are quiet and easy to use on your brake rotors. Your brake pads don't need to create a lot of heat in order to get the friction needed to stop effectively.

Drawbacks Of Organic Brake Pads

There are a few drawbacks of organic brake pads. To start with, organic brake pads do not work well with sports and high performance vehicles.

Organic brake pads, although they cost less than other brake pads, they also tend to wear out faster than other types of brake pads. They also work best within a set temperature range; when they get too hot, they don't create enough friction and don't work as effectively. They also compress a lot and can make your brakes feel kind of mushy when you press on them.

Organic brakes pads are an affordable option that are great for commuting vehicles, but not high performance vehicles. Remember though, that they tend to wear out more quickly than higher performance brake pads so although you'll save some money up front, you may need to replace your brake pads sooner.
